Summary/Abstract: A green bond is an instrument designed specifically to support specific climate-related or environmental projects. Such instruments are one of the most prominent innovations in the area of sustainable finance. The article shows green bonds as a method for environmental projects funding. It analyses the potential of the green bond market to finance the shift towards sustainable economy. Funding environmental projects through green bonds may be of interest to any entity whether it is a private company, financial institution or a public entity. The article shows the place of green bonds as a funding method in Poland, then the main regulations were mentioned and analyzed. The regulations on the European Union level were presented. Then the main barriers as well as the main benefits were pointed out. It is worth mentioning that Poland was a precursor of green bonds issuing in the Europe. Here was located the first in the world emission of sovereign green bonds, and this activity was awarded during the 2017 Climate Bonds Annual Conference.
