Summary/Abstract: Which form for which function is a question at the center of architectural theory since the treatises exist. Ever since the Vitruvian triad of firmitas, utilitas, and venustas, architecture has longed for a balance between structure, use, and beauty, even if it was interpreted in different ways to define good architecture. Distinguishing between “good” and “bad” also meant pointing out a moral issue regarding the aesthetics of architecture; and from Gothic Revival to modern architecture, it meant to define decoration as both something needed and despicable.
