Summary/Abstract: The article starts by presenting the international context in which the 2015-2016 migration crisis occured in Europe. A framework of push, pull and catalysing factors for migration routes is put forward in order to facilitate the better understanding of the phenomenon and its causes. This is followed by a retrospective analysis of the events which started with the Arab Spring and subsequent Arab Winter and describes in further detail the significant role that the EU, Turkey and other Balkan states have played in the unfolding of this moment of history. Particular focus will be given to the EU-Turkey balance of interests and how each side negotiated in search of a mutually beneficial agreement which stemmed the flow of migrants and also progressed Turkish EU integration talks. The article will follow the various aspects of the complex phenomenon of migration by focusing on its political, diplomatic, social and humanitarian aspects.
