Summary/Abstract: The Nord Stream 2 project has caused controversy from its very beginning. On one hand, Russia, Germany, Austria and the Netherlands have supported this project, arguing that it is important for Europe’s energy security. On the other hand, the US, Ukraine and Poland are opposing the gas pipeline, claiming that it will further empower Russia over Europe and threaten the security of Eastern Europe, especially that of Ukraine, that would be left without any leverage over Moscow. Although about 95% of the pipeline is completed, its fate is currently uncertain. After the poisoning and then the arrest and imprisonment of Alexei Navalny, the number of those who demand the halt of the project, including among European officials, has increased. More and more analysts claim that Nord Stream 2 is doomed to failure and it is only a matter of time until this happens. An important element in this equation will be the elections that will take place this autumn in Germany and Russia, whose results will directly influence the future of the Nord Stream 2.
