Summary/Abstract: The study is an attempt to answer not only the question posed in the title, but also related questions, in particular the following: Do we suffer before we suffer? Is this so the more we avoid suffering? Is it better to suffer evil than not to suffer? Is it true that the less we suffer, the less we know reality? Is it the case that the better the knowledge of evil, the greater the suffering? Can the meaning of suffering be completely “seen”? The answers are given in the analysis and brief comments on the arguments regarding how they can be reconstructed from the relevant texts by Robert Spaemann. The view of his father, Heinrich Spaemann, is also involved; and other secondary sources are taken into account as well. The problem of suffering is viewed from the point of view of Christian philosophy in contrast to the antinatalist view of David Benatar. The study captures interesting paradoxes associated with suffering and offers orientation rather than definitive answers.
