Summary/Abstract: Out of the multitude of definitions of principles of criminal procedure, the author attempts to choose those which most completely express the essence of these procedural institutes. It is not possible to single out just one as being correct, since each one of them points at different essential property of these institutes. Particular attention is dedicated to the relativity of principles of criminal procedure and to some principal factors influencing their transformation. These factors emerge out of the sphere of law or outside it (real social circumstances). Also introduced are the notions of objective and subjective relativity which are explained and classified into relevant categories. Finally, the review is made of various methodological approaches by individual authors treating the principles of criminal procedure, who connected them with subjects, actions, judicial decisions or evidence.
