Summary/Abstract: An investigation of Philippe Jaccottet’s aesthetical system involves dealing with a specific method concerning two essential scriptural acts. In all his works, Jaccottet incessantly doubts as to the legitimacy of the (poetic) language, which cannot name or figure something without necessarily implying the absence of the objective referent. The aim of our paper is to examine the way in which Jaccottet builds his textual universe by means of which he should have obviously undermined it. The support of our analysis is Chants d’en bas, a collection of poems that Jaccottet wrote in 1973. A close investigation will afford successive series of hypotheses, which will attempt to clear up the paradoxes that seem to lie at the basis of the Swiss poet’s aesthetics.
