Summary/Abstract: The article uses the rhetorical perspective to filter the events, the dialogue and the setting of a short episode of l’Oeuvre au Noir. Analysing in a systematic way all the emergences of the individual, the study establishes the common aim of all these occurrences – the dissimulation – as well as two major forms to achieve this. On the one hand, it is all a matter of dissimulation of significances, and, on the other, of dissimulation of things. On the rhetorical plan, we deal with individuals who exploit the resources of semantics or, on the contrary, with individuals who exploit the relation of the sign with its referent. This movement from a category of individuals to the other is situated in the centre of the episode. It reflects a deepening of the rhetorical problematisation which, as a result of a mere semantic method, becomes a casualisation of the real, of the status of characters, of their relation with the world and the fiction.
