Summary/Abstract: The War of the Words in the Letter LXXXI of Les Liaisons dangereuses (Laclos). Madame de Merteuil’s discourse is highly polemical especially when she feels a threat from her interlocutor. The letter LXXXI is illustrative of her tactics, but also appears paradoxical since La Marquise betrays her basic principle of never writing about her inner life. Our intention is to identify and explain the devices she uses to fight her interlocutor (Valmont), i.e. the means of polemics.
