Summary/Abstract: Equivalence in translation has always been considered a controversial issue, its relevance and applicability being constantly questioned. The problems raised by this versatile concept have been addressed by well-known scholars in the field, their theories studying equivalence in relation to the process of translation in order to either validate it or dismiss it as irrelevant and even “illusory”. My paper attempts to register some of the most important theories in the field in order to emphasise its importance in the process of transferring a written message from one language into another.
