“SAGGAHANEH” MOVEMENT: A LOCAL INTERPRETATION OF IRAN AVANGARD ART

Summary/Abstract: The term Saggahaneh (Sâqa-khaneh) first appeared in Iran in 1962. This movement has largely been used to refer to a contemporary art movement that is considered the first culturally original modern art movement. This art movement has been a combination of traditional and modern art. Thus, Iranian contemporary painting has largely saved it from the stagnation and confusion that it has experienced in recent years, and has raised it in the national and international art world.In the 1940s and 1950s, artists were often anti-traditional, but from the 1960s intellectual discourse has thrust them between two poles: traditionalism and modernism. This complex debate has brought various movements and a new approach to the traditional heritage of Iran, which is considered modern traditionalism. This important stage in Iranian modern art can be associated with the growing trend of confrontation between the past and the present, which unites Iran's artistic identity and the demands of modernism. The most important art movement arising from this trend is the Saggahaneh movement. The Saqqahaneh movement is considered a neo-traditional modern art movement based on the history of Ghahvekhaneh paintings in Iran and Shiite Islamic visual elements. This research has been enriched with visual sources by making a comprehensive literature review on the birth of Iran's modern art movement after the 1960s. The chosen topic is important in terms of creating a source and contributing to the literature about the Saggahaneh movement.
