Summary/Abstract: These translations from the Japanese present some poems by the great reformer Emperor Meiji (1852–1912). He was also a great poet. He used the ancient Japanese form of poetry, waka, to show his people how to live wisely and morally. The themes of his poems are nature, human relations, education, matters of the soul, and thoughts and feelings on the passing moment. I have selected eight of his poems about nature, and fifty-five about issues of education and the right way of life. These poems are similar to Ferenc Kölcsey’s Parainesis. I hope that they will have a great impact on Hungarian readers, too.
