ON SCHIZOID DISORDER OF PERSONALITY: THE CASE OF SÜREYYA IN THE NOVEL UNUTMA BENİ APARTMANI OF NERMIN YILDIRIM

Summary/Abstract: Nermin Yıldırım is a well-known modern Turkish author, having penned many seven novels as well as dozens of stories, published in various magazines. Her first novel is Unutma Beni Apartmanı (Forget Me Apartment). It focuses on a heroine/woman by the name of Süreyya, whose personality is rather inflexible She struggles maintaining a good relationship with her environment, and as a result is very much introverted. She prefers to engage in only one activity almost all the time; she lacks close friends or confidants. She is indifferent to the praise or criticism of others, and comes across as cold, detached, or monotone. She wants to try out sex, but cannot. From a psychiatric angle, she appears to be schizoid personality. As such, this study will deal with Nermin Yıldırım’s novel writing, it will also analyze how Sürreya’s disorder exhibits itself by studying her character.
