Priority was placed on education modernize the empire, compensate for lost provinces, and save it from the brink of collapses. One major figure during that movement (beginning in around 1845) was Ahmet Cevdet Pasha, historian, judge, teacher, school principal, Ottoman Minister of Education, textbook author, and academy member. As such, he helped shape education reforms both directly or indirectly. One of his books, Tezakir, reflects on his career in education. It offers us original information not found in other sources.
