Summary/Abstract: This paper aims to highlight the efforts and the increased interest of the European Union in the field of privacy. Especially, it is focused on the protection of personal data, by analyzing the current European legislation in this field. Moreover, one of the central elements of the paper is developed around the principles of processing personal data, firstly by analyzing how they govern both the rules imposed by Regulation (EU) no. 2016/679 on the protection of personal data, and secondly the actual implementation of these provisions in the activity of a legal person. In the latter, the controller submits to the obligation of respecting the principles while conducting a GDPR policy. At the same time, the paper stresses out the legal grounds for processing and the need for an extensive and appropriate analysis of the lawfulness of the data processing. Thus, the research proves that the analysis of the whole range of processing possibilities in relation to the activity carried out by the legal person may lead to the avoidance of additional procedures, which are of no practical use. The novelty of the approach and the impact of the regulation on the European and national legislative context have determined the interest in developing such research. This happened especially since the regulation is applicable on a large scale, because of the regulation’s provisions that might be extended to controllers outside the Union, if they are targeting European citizens’ personal data.
