Summary/Abstract: The article is a reflection on the nature of a genre. It is set within the framework of contemporary rhetorical genre studies as a research approach situated alongside linguistic, literary, and media genre studies, which operates with a framework of its own research categories. It refers to rhetorical criticism as a method of studying artifacts in communicative space. The key category under consideration is the rhetorical potential of a genre as a communicative tool and the possibility of its discovery in critical reflection. An outline of rhetorical criticism based on four dimensions of a genre is presented: communicative-teleological, temporal-spatial, compositional-stylistic, and discursive-subjective. The study involves considering questions specific to each dimension about the particularities of the chosen genre. The article presents possibilities for formulating questions around categories relevant to each area.
