Summary/Abstract: The literary motif of love as an illness, inspired in Ovid’s Remedia Amoris and the medieval philosophy of amour courtois, pervaded the humanists’ Petrarchan style and the Renaissance Neoplatonims, and subsequently was diffused extensively throughout the lyrical production of the Spanish Golden Age. The current study aims, firstly, at analysing the various meanings and philosophical nuances that the topos of love as an illness acquires in the poetry of Garcilaso, according to the Herrera’s comments in Anotaciones and, ultimately, at giving testimony upon the way in which Herrera successfully manages to establish within his Castilian arsenal of poetical commonplaces a special place for the constitutive elements of love as illness motif.
