FACTORS THAT SHAPE THE DESIGN IN THEATRE FOR THE ACTORS WITH DOWN SYNDROME

Summary/Abstract: Individuals with down syndrome show different developmental characteristics than their typical peers. This study aim to investigate the effects of muscle and motor skill development of individuals with down syndrome among the group of individuals with special needs to set and costume design within a theatre practice. A play had been staged as the outcome of a project named In-Orchestra with 15 individuals with special needs who diagnosed down syndrome individuals during six months of 24 rehearsals which was held every week. There had been a three months long design and building process before the play Umut Otobüsü (Bus of Hope) was presented. Stage design in general, is shaped around the text, in line with the results of a series of pre-meetings of author, dramaturgist, director and designer. Besides, there are matters of design which set the framework of aesthetics that are direct the choices of form and practice as well as choice of materials. During rehearsals, actor individual’s skill range is also taken into consideration as one of the factors that shape the design. In this study case study, observation, interview and document analysis was used as methods of qualitative research methods. The study discusses the need of forming the design in conformity with individuals with special needs psychomotor skills and cognitive enhancement. Criteria and methods regarding stage design and its realization process are proposed for individuals with special needs.
