Contemporary Helplessness in the Face of Ethics. Patočka’s Lesson in Caring for the Soul

Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the phenomenon of the increasing indifference and helplessness of society in the current reality in relation to ethical reflection as well as the “spiritual sphere of existence.” The author attempts to analyze the contemporary dissatisfaction with the exist-ing ethical adjudications and the consequences that they bring, as well as problems resulting from the domination of natural sciences over humanities and the difficulties in reconciling human subjectivity with the image of the world formulated by positive sciences. The aim of the article is to present the philosophical views of the Czech phenomenologist Jan Patočka in order to make evident the message flowing from his philosophy, which is intended to func-tion as an appeal and a call for an attempt to overcome the situation of lapse of ethical reflec-tion and universal indifference to it.
