Summary/Abstract: The article presents and systematically analyses the concept of social cohesion, as it is used in the social quality approach. The concept is related to traditional understandings, as well as to more modern understandings, ranging from academic debates to political debates about the concept. Two main perceptions of the concept have been distinguished: first, that understanding of the concept is limited to the everyday world and, second, that understanding may include the role of social systems. The traditional approaches (Durkheim, Lockwood) emphasized social cohesion as part of the everyday world, while modern understandings include the systems. This is mostly visible in the political discourse. On the other hand the development of indicators of social cohesion within the social quality approach has been the following: from including system indicators at the beginning to the narrowing the concept on the every-day world and individual level at the end, even though the concept was defined as belonging to the macro level.
