Directly and Indirectly Offensive Speech in Language Reference Books: Discourse of Slovene Language Dictionaries

Summary/Abstract: While contemporary lexicographic practice throughout the world is striving to provide an adequate non-offensive account of phraseology containing negative connotations related to members of a particular (mainly marginalised) community, the descriptions of the Slovene language given in dictionaries are far from social sensitivity. Slovene language dictionaries feature directly and indirectly offensive language, contained on the level of entries, dictionary definitions, and examples of use, respectively. Since language reference books, and dictionaries in particular, are commonly perceived as authoritative books in a society, the lexical solutions they provide can also serve as an argument in encouraging and spreading intolerance. Authors therefore need to be aware of that fact and act responsibly and in accordance with social sensitivity in the process of compiling dictionaries.
