Summary/Abstract: In October 2017, in Târgu-Secuiesc (Hungarian: Kézdivásárhely, Romania) the first issue of the comic magazine Fantomatika appeared (name taken from Stanisław Lem’s fictional worlds). Preceded by a successful media campaign, rarely found among the new press products, Fantomatika quickly became a standard of aesthetic quality, a landmark of design in the world of comics, being nominated even for the prestigious “Alfabéta” Cartoon Award from Hungary. However, despite its qualities, the magazine failed to become an economic success, and in March 2018, due to economic reasons, it had to withdraw from the market. The article analyzes the media context of the success, but also of the fall of Fantomatika magazine.
