Summary/Abstract: This study is aimed at analyzing the work of Dimitri Dan “Folk beliefs of the Bukovinians”, which is published in issue 21 of the “Letter of the Bukovinian Paper” during 1894–1895. Dan's research issues are little known in Ukraine, due to the lack of translations and publications, which are not easy to find in Ukrainian historical and ethnological libraries. The aim of the article is a comprehensive study of the rites and beliefs of the Romanians in Bukovina, using the work of D. Dan “Folk beliefs of Bukovina”: maternity, family, funeral rites, folk medicine, occasional customs and rites and more. The research methodology is based on analysis, historical approach and translation from Romanian. Conclusions. The proposed article analyzes the researcher's records in the field of family rituals (girls' participation in dances, the role of unborn water, the process of engagement, wedding, wedding, birth, protection, baptism), funeral rites, folk medicine, animal protection and more. The study includes also translations from Romanian of the original beliefs and texts of the description of the rites, which are associated with folk medicine. The novelty of presented texts from D. Dan's work is also based on the cites of the not published manuscript. The presented study helps to create a certain knowledge about the worldview of a man of that time and the processes of its evolution. The article complements the ethnographic data collected in Bukovina by other scholars. This research is also valuable because it was written by a scholar, who lived in that environment for many years and knew perfectly the customs and rituals of the Romanians.
