Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to one of the aspects of the transition of the former Eastern Bloc countries to the parliamentary democracy and market economy, namely - the reorientation of the former socialist countries from East to West. The emphasis is on the specifics of the integration processes in the countries of Central Europe, in contrast to those in the Balkan countries. It is sought an answer to the question why the three countries with the most successful transformation – Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic, are gradually becoming the European Union critics after passing so successfully on the road to the West.
