Summary/Abstract: This article is intended to present the state of the Turkish Armenians after the Russo-Turkish War from 1877–1878 and after the Berlin Peace Treaty and to analyse the reasons due to which Saint Petersburg – a traditional defendant of Christianity within the Ottoman Empire, followed a generally neutral and indifferent position towards the repressive policy of the Sublime Porte regarding the Armenians. Due to a number of political, economic and religious reasons Russia was a factor with essential significance in the history of Armenians back from the beginning of the 19th century. After the Treaty of Berlin, however, the tsarist government temporarily refused its current role and showed great caution and reservations about improving life in the Ottoman areas inhabited by Armenians, according to Article 61 of the Berlin Peace Treaty. The behavior of Saint Petersburg during the period under review proves that for the empire the Armenian Question has always taken a secondary place in its policy and appears to be an object of pure diplomacy lacking non-politicalor military factors.
