Summary/Abstract: The present paper provides a glimpse into a less researched position in the hungarian civil service during Dualism, namely the officials presiding the orphan courts or sees (sedrii orfanale) in Transylvania. It argues that this office and the corps of officials holding it should be examined more closely in order to be able to better understand the shifts in the Hungarian state’s welfare programs during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The paper explores several key issues related to the presidents of the orphan courts in Transylvania between 1876 and 1914: firstly, the professional attributions held by this office; secondly, the importance of the office as reflected by the income and level of public influence it generated; thirdly, it sketches out a group analysis of those individuals who occupied this position during Dualism in Transylvanian counties.
