TO THE HISTORY OF PREPARATION OF I. FRANKO'S WORKS EDITION IN 20 VOLUMES

Summary/Abstract: The relevance of the study is motivated by the need to clarify the little-known details of the preparation of Ivan Franko’s works publication in 20 volumes, to introduce information from archival documents into scientific circulation. Elimination of gaps contributes to the development of a holistic concept of the history of multivolume collections of Ivan Franko’s works. The scientific novelty is due to the fact that the textual and source history of this collection hasn’t been the subject of scientific analysis. The purpose of the article is to investigate the time range and circumstances of preparation for the publication of works by Ivan Franko in 20 volumes; to establish the circle of involved persons who in one way or another joined the publication at different times; to outline the difficulties in implementing a new publishing project. Research methods. General scientific methods (analysis, synthesis, comparative, descriptive- chronological) are combined with special methods — source and textual, used in the search, detection, selection of sources, their comprehensive critical study, establishing the reliability and informative value of the source. Conclusions. Preparation of I. Franko's works edition in 20 volumes originates from the previous edition of works in 25 volumes. Its concept was not only discussed at the official level in the post-war period, but also concrete steps were taken towards its implementation. Adverse political circumstances of the second half of 1940s postponed the plans. The result of the conflict was the removal of M. Vozniak from the editorial board, he painfully went through the concealment of the team of Lviv scientists’ merits in the development of Ivan Franko’s legacy. The multivolume book was published during 1950–1956 and presented a large part of little-known material to the mass reader.
