Summary/Abstract: Adoption of the new Law on Local Self-Government introduced in our legal and social practice new institutions among which are Councils for Interethnic Relations. There are many opened questions regarding authorities and election of these bodies that should be established in multiethnic municipalities; further confusions are made with imprecise usage of the terms national and ethnic community and national minority. Local democracy development includes these situations and recognition of both good practice examples and problems regarding work of the councils for interethnic relations should contribute both to legal constitution of these bodies and better perception and understanding of social relations within local self-governments.
