Summary/Abstract: In this article we deal with Gogol’s moral and ethical profile (Gogol as a man). Besides our efforts to build up an image referring to Gogol’s character and nature, we also tried to point out the influence of the epoch in which Gogol lived over his subsequent evolution as a writer (Gogol as a writer). Our efforts aim at throwing into relief his complex personality and pointing out the influence of his genetic stock, as well as that of his own experiences, on his literary work. N.V. Gogol’s image is at the centre of this article. Numerous letters, addressed to his parents, brothers, mates, friends, extracts from literary criticism, as well as fragments from the memories of those who knew him, all contribute to building up Gogol’s image. Among those who knew the writer, or researched his work, thus offering the reader a large amount of new information and expert observations, we can mention S.T. Aksakov and his son Konstantin Aksakov, P. Annenkov, V. Belinski N.G. Cernashevski, A.S. Danilevski, D. Merejkovski, A.S. Pushkin, V. Zenkovski etc.
