Summary/Abstract: The first task the authoress has set herself is to determine the present contents of the concepts European and non-European. For this purpose she has followed up the historical evolution of these concepts, particularly in the period after the Second World War when in Eastern Europe was imposed the Soviet model of state socialism. The conclusion is that in this case by non-European is meant the specific East-European tradition and not so much the real non-European – for instance the Asian, African or some other one. In the study proper an attempt has been made to formulate the basic characteristics of East-European socialism and of its Bulgarian variant. The origin of these characteristics, the peculiarities which distinguish them from the West European model have been sought, as well as the parallels which can be discovered in the history of European civilization and also in the Asian view on the development of society in the world.
