Summary/Abstract: The paper is focused on the presentation of knowledge about folk ballads from the Czech Republic and their reflection in Czech music. The starting point is an approach to the life of the ballad, its function in the original environment and the analysis of individual ballad themes. The author also gives examples of Czech musical works inspired by ballad themes. It points out the educational potential of ballads, indicates the possibilities of their application in the context of music pedagogical practice. Her knowledge is based on research of unpublished records in archives, especially the case of the collector of Moravian folk songs Martin Zeman (1854-1919) from Velká nad Veličkou.
