Summary/Abstract: Considering the double-fold context, that is the theatre culture of the 19th century and the birth of modern psychiatry, the study is focusing on specific acting performances of Kornélia Prielle, a leading Hungarian actress. Examining theatre critics’ reports about several performances of the French social drama entitled L’article 47 (written by Adolph Belot) in which she played Cora, one of the main characters, the study explores her means/practices of creative expression, as well as other biographical? sources related to her role-formation. Thus, it makes not only valid the perspective of performance studies for analysing historical acting styles, but, through an entanglement with the social-cultural and scientific contexts, it brings into attention the general interest of the era in so-called illnesses of the mind, together with the birth of modern psychiatric institutions.
