Summary/Abstract: The study intends to present the everyday life and the duties of the town mercenaries (in primary sources called darabont/Drabant/Trabant, Fussoldat and stipendarius) of Cluj, Sighișoara and Brașov from the early modern Transylvania. Their main duties were to guard the gate towers of the cities. Before the time of Giorgio Basta’s administration they were also recruited in the armies of the Principality. The primary sources of the study are the accounting books of the towns, the accounts of the commanders of the mercenaries, and the military correspondence of the magistrates of Sighișoara and Brașov dating from four different periods from the mid-16th and mid-17th centuries.
