Summary/Abstract: Nikolai Gogol’s understanding of Art, Beauty, the role of the Artist in society, were strongly influenced by his religious beliefs. In his well-known novel, The Portrait, his views appear to be more transparent than in the others. For Gogol, the Artist has a huge responsibility, for his Art has the role of turning people towards God. The Painter himself should have a clean soul, because his Art depends on the purity of his soul. The one who does not fulfill his talent sins against God, since his talent is a gift from the Provicence. The purpose of this essay is to review all these ideas, as they are suggested in the novel The Portrait.
