Summary/Abstract: This article examines the Italian cultural penetration in Bulgaria in the 20s and the first half of the 30s as one of the channels of the spread of fascist ideas in Bulgarias society, and follows up the precesses of laying fascist propaganda messages over those of cultural propaganda. The various institutions active in the field pf Bulgarian-ltalian cultural links enjoyed the backing of Mussolini’s regime and ensured opportunities for discreet persuasion and recruiting, compulsorily linked to the maintenance of Italy’s political and cultural prestige. The Italian cultural presence found most dependable support in the educational institutions but did not give up other forms of cultural influence. Its direct contracts with Bulgarian society turned it into a favourite and convenient tool of fascist propaganda, although its actions were more the upshot of individual initiative than of a propaganda strategy formed in advance. Its importance for Italian foreign policy increased in the late 20s with the consolidation of the fascist regime and the development of the idea of the universality of fascism.
