Summary/Abstract: The subject of the article are self-destructive tendencies in the contemporary European culture. An indication of the observation of these tendencies are among others: thesis F. Fukuyama about the end of philosophy, cultural catastrophism of A. Bobkowski, W. Gombrowicz and Cz. Miłosz. In the sphere of the highbrow culture these tendencies are reinforced by postmodernism. Their result is a reduction the level of the political class, pandering to average tastes and the dominance of the mass culture. The author called this culture as a “ochlocracy”. These tendencies are leading to the disappearance of virtue of the solidarity and the responsibility as well as the public trust. It indicates the disintegration of the society.
