Summary/Abstract: The article is dedicated to the transformations of the social infrastructure of reading (term coined by Elisabeth Long), associated with the popularization of the circulation of texts in electronic formats. The change of the textual status is analyzed here through the case study of academic texts. The author concentrates on the distribution process – often neglected in discussions of reading –which marks the framework of the social functioning of texts. More and more popular practices of online textual exchange constitute a resilient informal distribution which can be treated as a reaction to requirements faced by Polish (and other) academics, related to hindered access to resources. The largest scale of influence can be observed in highly specialized, informal repositories of texts, the so-called “shadow libraries.”
