Summary/Abstract: The interwar period is known in the history of the Orthodox Church in Poland as being marked by a series of critical moments and numerous, sometimes dramatic efforts with the view of normalizing the State-Church relations. The two knotty, ticklish, stringent problems that needed to be solved immediately in order to ensure the well functioning of the Church activity were: the clarification of the external Church statute and the validation of its juridical statute. The State-Church relations in the prewar period stood under the auspices of these two major co-ordinates. In this essay I mainly covered the first of the two autocephalies of the Polish Orthodox Church, obtained in 1924-1925 with the aid of the thomos issued by the Constantinople’s Patriarch, strongly contested and denied by the Mother-Church - The Russian Orthodox Church. Due to the complexity of the issues implied by this first autocephaly, we did not refer in this paper to the second and last autocephaly, obtained in 1948, this time with the blessing of the Patriarchy in Moscow. This matter is subject to a distinct discussion.
