Summary/Abstract: This study analyses the identity of literary criticism in 1989 Romania, in the last year of communist dictatorship, by scrutinising literary chronicles published by Nicolae Manolescu and Eugen Simion in ”România Literară” (Literary Romania). Through open confrontation with the political system and its ideology, the two critical voices with their authority constitute a bastion of defence for the aesthetic. Being in the first line, the critical feuilleton ensures the dignity of literary criticism and of Romanian intellectual life, at a time when the pages of ”România Literară” were filled with articles that were not devoid of political substratum, and the critics were demanded to serve communist ideology.
