Summary/Abstract: A laboratory of ideas that shed light on innovative projects and architectural quality paired with ways to save energy is the “Low Carbon Competition” originally called “Architecture with less carbon dioxide”. This competition was initiated in France in 2007 by the EDF Foundation (national electricity supply from France). Energy is today no longer regarded as something that complements the building offering comfort and functionality, but is an item that is under consideration in town planning, architectural projects and rehabilitation, encouraging the capitalizing of the resources of territory. After five years of experience, analyzing the projects from this competition, we can draw the following conclusions: Architecture must prevail over the technique. Without a definite quality of performance and the quality of life, there is no durable technical innovation. • In addition to the requirements of cardinal orientation, utility, solidity and beauty, to the architectural requirements is added the long-term profitability. The energy has his important place in the local policy at the level of the town, zone or architectural object.
