Summary/Abstract: The places that can be considered to be the most representative for our time are nothing but their result. They are those de-constructed places, non-architectural, places that try to avoid the strategies and urban planning, although being part of the urbanized space, places that have been abandoned “in between”, derived from an abandoned society itself “in between”. These transition places “on hold”, already represent, since many years, the subject of study for the Master Workshop “Extreme limits” of the Faculty of Architecture of the Free University in Brussels, a fertile ground for exploration of prospective methods. The workshop is, first of all, a place of exchange, discussion, and debate, of dialogues between students, teachers and guests from other areas as philosophy, sociology, art, mathematics. It becomes a research laboratory aiming to create a group, a set of individual hypotheses which are brought face to face, related, and grouped around a common theme that will generate workshop projects. The workshop takes the form of “laboratories” that allow to raise students’ awareness regarding architecture as “cultural field” as worldview, stimulating new ways of looking, changing the way of looking at it, to understand and analyze a country, territory, a site, how to defuse it, to travel through it, to explore it, to conceptualize it, to imagine it, and finally to be transformed, perturbed.
