Summary/Abstract: This essay argues for the value of studying literature as an important moral and imaginative force in our contemporary world. It first considers the role that literature has played in history as a source of the master narratives that have defined the way peoples see themselves. It then considers the various ways in which literature and the literary imagination can act as sites either of protest against or of symbolic reimagining of social conditions or behaviors in need of change. Examples are offered from past and contemporary world literature to show how literature is uniquely capable of creating and sustaining imaginative and moral space to critique and improve the world we live in.
