Summary/Abstract: The author examined the principal reasons which affected Greek policy during the Eastern Crisis. The passive behaviour of the Greek State and its reluctance to intervene in the liberation movement of the Balkan peoples against Ottoman rule were due to several reasons. Above all the grave catastrophes brought about by the previous abortive attempts to throw away Turkish domination. Another cause was the reluctance of Greece to stand on the side of Russia since this would impede the long-term goals of Grecianism, and also the compliance with the stand of the European Powers. The grave financial state of Greece and the low level of the military training of the Greek army also reduced the chances of a successful end of the liberation struggle. Of importance was also the tactical goal changed all the time by the Greek governments. All this determined the passive attitude of Greece during the Eastern Crisis.
