Summary/Abstract: There are only a few are writers who have made as great an impact on entire generations as Gustav Flaubert did. It seems that the whole literary era begins and ends with his work and appearance. He defies challenging and leading ideas and belief systems of his age, in order to unmask a long-held fallacy we all lived in. Each literary school provides a different interpretation of his work (realist, naturalist, structuralist, herald of nouveau roman, formalist…). Rich heritage built up of his manuscripts, notes, commentaries, coupled with his genetic criticism, reveal (yet again!) new Flaubert’s faces. Flaubert’s life was dedicated to reaching an ideal of producing true and genuine literature, by fictionalising reality and mind meanderings, while the author remains de-personalised. Flaubert is an artist in the fullest sense of the word, with his literary aspirations summed up as follows: „An artist is like God when he creates – invisible and omniscient – he is felt everywhere and seen nowhere“.
