Traditional Feminine Names in the Romanian Anthroponymy

Summary/Abstract: In this article we submit to analysis the category of traditional Romanian feminine names formed from common words and toponyms. We included here the feminine names that are formed through conversion from common words of the vocabulary and the ones created through the process of motion from the masculine forms, created in their turn through the method of conversion. The article presents the following seven categories of traditional feminine anthroponymical forms: a) Names that indicate the origin of a person: Armeanca, Greaca, Românca; b) Names that come from names of plants and terms that indicate parts of trees: Brânduşa, Cetina, Frăguţa; c) Names that come from names of animals: Lupa, Mierla, Păuna; d) Names that indicate the family relation: Feciora, Fetiţa, Sora; e) Names that indicate physical and character features: Alba, Buna, Muşata; f) Names that indicate different popular beliefs: Bucura, Oprea, Urâta; g) Names that come from common words with different meanings: Barba, Chiajna, Crăciuna.
