Summary/Abstract: The article examines the semiotics of the Czech rite Jízda králů, which is structural element of the novel Joke by M.Kundera. The author of the article comes to the conclusion that this rite genetically traced back to the primitive rite of initiation of boys in status in the community. Semiotics of crowning and debunking of the king, bearing a strong comic charge, is reflected in the destiny of the protagonist's Ludvik Jahn. The destiny of the heroine of the novel Lucy is built on models initiation rite, as well as of different genres of Czech folklore. The above forms of rituals in the novel actualize two specific Czech concepts - lítost and zášť.
