Summary/Abstract: The focus of the paper is the differentiation of the traditional necked bowl lutes, part of the past and/or present instrumental practice of various ethnical and religious groups on Bulgarian territory. They are known as tambura, saz, bulgariya, baylama, karaduzen, etc. The main distinguishing marks outlined by researchers and instrument makers are size, number of strings and tuning, as well as fretting. Along with them, the issues of designation (in parallel to the Turkish instrumental practice mainly), origin (Ottoman and pre-Ottoman hypotheses), and ethnical identification are commented. Based on the exposed and analized data, a division of the traditional necked bowl lutes on Bulgarian territory in three main subdivisions – tambura, saz, bulgariya, is suggested.
