Summary/Abstract: “Beautiful Image” (1941), Marcel Aymé’s novel, presents a beautiful metamorphosis: Raoul Cérusier, an ordinary man, discovers one normal day, when handing over his photography to a clerk of the Parisian administration, that his dull face has undergone a metamorphosis and has been replaced by a handsome and attractive one. The face transparency is not a mere metaphor, says the first-person narrator. This idea becomes a sort of leitmotif that guides the main character’s reflections on who he really is. This paper aims at analysing how this absurd adventure turns into a complex journey in search of one’s real identity.
