Summary/Abstract: In this paper, we plan to illustrate the way in which the writer C. V. Gheorghiu reflected in the novel L’Espionne (1971) the socio-political and cultural reality of the twentieth century. On the one hand, the analysis of these literary texts spotlights a series of emblematic characters from Romanian history, the criteria of social stratification that operated a century ago, the opposition between the bourgeoisie and the proletariat and most importantly, the ideological context that created a new human type, the ‘human-mass’, the standardized and depersonalized ‘robot’. On the other hand, the selected body of text highlights the name of the personalities that marked the cultural and artistic evolution of the Romanian society, retracing the image of the exiled, of the political refugee, as to convey the essential aspects of a troubled and troublesome epoch.
