Summary/Abstract: In the 1990s, German historians started talking about the ambivalence of national socialist culture and differentiated strategies there that bring contemporary cultural situation close. The article derives from the discussion held at Bremen university in the 1990s. The results were presented in Franz Dröge and Michael Müller’s book Die Macht der Schönheit. Avantgarde und Faschismus oder die Feburt der Masserkultur. Contrary to Boris Groys whose scandalous article Stalin-Stil made totalitarianism the heir of the avant-garde manifested by socialist realism, the authors are convinced of the difference in the aims of both movements. Avant-garde wanted to crush traditional art altogether, national socialism aspired to adapt past art by means of ideological restoration.
